29 Years Ago Today - The Valentines Day Massacre
Oldham Athletic 6-0 West Ham United

Remember it like it was yesterday. Pissing down with rain, muddy car park, freezing cold.

I remember after every goal went in loads of people turning and chucking coins at the scoreboard (which was just light bulbs). Could barely tell the score by the end.

I also remember my brother catching one of the warm up balls and sticking it up his jumper, and selling it for 50 quid the next day.

Other than the Play-Off final vs Palace, definitley my lowest moment as a West Ham fan.

Massive coincidence that the Valentine's Day massacre happened on 14th of February.

Haha norm,
Fisherman blues is a great listen early in morning on a summers day.
Not one for pike fishing as a rule but booked a gaff for next weekend in Norfolk.
It's a bit of a pissup to be honest going with herself and the kids.it could pay dividends if I get up early.
Taking light tackle to go spinning with.

I listen to Robert Elms on Radio London even though he's a west London Hoop I quite like the bloke.
He's very good at all things London. Rang him many a times off me trolley.

Something else just occurred to me. As well as the trouncing, I also went to the 2nd leg.
Apart from stupidly allowing myself to get my hopes for a few minutes, one odd thing stands out in my memory; and that's the sight of Stewart Robson hobbling round the back of the west side during the game. Fuck knows what he was up to.

I just remember him trying an overhead kick in nearly every game...might be an exaggeration but did he also have a trampoline when he was growing up? Which would have been a rare thing in those days

;-)

I remember going to the second leg under the lights - it was 3-0 but could have matched what they did to us in the first leg. Even David Kelly scored...I think he tried an overhead kick in that game to but missed and fell on his arse - his speciality

I did read somewhere that David 'Ned' Kelly ended up on his back side after every goal he scored for us, which was 7 I believe. His excuse was that he had one leg longer than the other after a childhood illness.

Can any of you lot also remember what you were wearing or what you had to eat at ht? All I remember is standing behind the goal getting wet. Don't recall how I got there and back or even who I went with.

I listened to it in my bedroom on the radio, probably radio two at the time, I could hear the away fans clearly singing "show me the way to go home".

Re: 29 Years Ago Today - The Valentines Day Massacre
Yes, it poured down throughout.

Those from my train were marched by the police from the station to the ground in pouring rain. I had an Evening News with me which I put on top of my head, but the rain quickly soaked through it and it turned into a papier-mâché helmet around my head in next to no time.

Once at the open terrace away end it also continued to pour, we even let one in during the first minute straight after kick off. It also continued raining on the way back to the station after the match had finished.

I was wearing a brand new black leather jacket that evening but the rain soaked into it and totally ruined it.
